Do you mind if I share a quick story?
A quick summary of the context: Back in the day, the King of Syria was warring against Israel. There was a prophet in Israel named Elisha, and he knew ahead of time where the king of Syria and his army would camp so he would pass that information onto the king of Israel. Because of Elisha’s warnings to the king of Israel, the king was saved on many occasions. When the king of Syria found out the Elisha was the “little birdie” giving away all his secrets, he decided to send a great army to the city where Elisha was to get rid of him. But this is what happens:
When the servant of the man of God [Elisha] rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, ‘Alas, my master! What shall we do?’ He said, ‘Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:15-17
Elisha’s servant was very lucky, he got to see with his own eyes the army that protected them. He could rest assured because he now knew that they were going to be ok. He went from a state of fear, to a state of relief (so I would imagine).
We do not have Elisha by our side today praying that our eyes be opened to see the army that is protecting us and fighting for us or to see that we need not be afraid; rather we have a Savior who gave Himself for us, who is at the right hand of God interceding for us, and who told us “In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
My prayer for us as believers is not that our physical eyes would be opened to see, but that we would walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7)…for Christ paid a precious price for our faith and it pleases Him greatly when we believe HIM! The truth is, our protection is there whether we see it or not – that army that fights for us – we just often spend so much of our time focusing on our opposition, our obstacles, and our fears.
What situation are you in today where you find yourself focusing more on what you see rather when what you don’t see? Where is God calling you to make a choice based on faith and not by sight? God wants you to rest in His power and His promises – don’t limit yourself to your own understanding!
I want to end off with a few verses that were immediately impressed upon my heart:
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the LORD.” Isaiah 54:17
“Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?'” John 11:40
May we encourage one another daily to walk by faith. Much love from my heart to yours!
